Sentara offers individual and group Diabetes education with certified diabetes educators

Diabetes education at SentaraPatients can attend both group classes and individual sessions. Group Classes Group classes are designed to help patients and their families learn the beginning skills needed to live successfully with diabetes. We encourage you to bring a family member or friend with you. What will you learn about in group classes? - Diabetes overview - Healthy eating - Adding physical activity into your lifestyle - Medicines - Blood Sugar Monitoring - Complications of Diabetes - Sick Day Management - Regular tests needed for diabetes Individual Sessions Individual sessions are also available for people who prefer learning in a more private, personalized setting, or have special learning needs. We offer a variety of topics in individual sessions, such as:- Carbohydrate counting- Insulin starts- Insulin pump starts- Blood glucose meter training- Meal planningSome patients may benefit from attending both group classes and individual sessions. Fees for group classes and individual sessions will be billed to all insurance carriers. Preauthorization may be required. Please check with your insurance carrier. A physician referral is required for insurance coverage.

Adult Diabetes Support Group

Every third Thursday of the month we have a support group that meets at the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

The group brings a different guest speaker each time that will give relevant information to all those affected by Diabetes. The group is there as a resource to help with any and all problems Diabetics, and their family and friends face. The group is often paused for the summer months.

Family Link Support Group

Families with Diabetic children meet once a month to share, learn and have fun together

Most often the group meets every third Saturday of the month for an activity such as Mini-Golf, Laser Tag or Bowling. The group consists of all different ages of diabetics who are looking to make friends and share their difficulties with one another.
