Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind - Low Vision Care Services

Low vision exams for people who have low vision.

Vision problems that can not be corrected by ordinary glasses, contact lenses, medication
or sugery are referred to as “low vision.” These problems are caused by genetic factor, injury, disease or effects of aging. Some of the most common diagnosed causes include: macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, glaucoma, and stroke. Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind provides comprehensive low vision care that includes: consultations with our low vision, optometrists for a low vision evaluation, consultations with our rehabilitation professionals, who can help you adjust to the activities of daily living and adjust to the psychological and social issues that can make living with low vision challenging. Consultations with our assistive technology specialist, who will recommend non-optical devices that use large print and/or speech output

Our hours of operation are Monday - Friday 8:00am-4:30pm by appointment.
Referrals are not always needed.

Southwest Health Center - Podiatry Services

Patients with an established Unity Health Care primary care provider can receive services.

Podiatry services are available for patients upon referral from their primary care provider. Once a referral is obtained, patients can call the Patient Scheduling Center at 202-469-4699 to make an appointment. Not all patients may need a referral. If unsure, patients are encouraged to call their insurance carrier for verification. Health Center hours of operation are Monday thru Friday 8:15 am to 4:45 pm.

Spanish Catholic Center Diabetes Type 2 Education Class

Bilingual Spanish and English Diabetes Self-Management Education Class.

Type 2 diabetes education class for patients and their families. This class is bilingual in English and Spanish and is held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 5:30-7:30 PM. Focus is on self-management education and peer support for blood glucose control. A Certified Diabetic Nurse Educator facilitates the discussion. Note that this class if for Spanish Catholic Center patients and their families.

Howard University Hospital Diabetes Treatment Center - Podiatry

Board certified endocrinologists, pediatric endocrinologist, podiatrist and pharmacist are available for consultation and ongoing management of diabetic patients

Expertise in diabetes management is available through highly trained health professionals in one location. Both adult and pediatric diabetic patients with either type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes may be referred for evaluation and treatment on Monday- Thursday from 9 am to 4 pm. Pharmacy counseling for medication reconcilliation is available on Monday and Tuesday from 9 am - 12 pm. Podiatry services are available on Wednesday from 9 am - 12 pm. Referrals are required. Most insurances are accepted and cover the cost of this service. Please call to make an appointment.

Spanish Catholic Center - Pasos Saludables (Healthy Steps)

Do you enjoy Zumba? Do you want to learn more about how to choose and cook healthy foods on a small budget? Then Healthy Steps is for you!

Program provides the following:
1. Health education on nutrition, exercise and chronic disease (heart disease and diabetes)
2. Supermarket/Farmer's market visit and instruction on choosing healthy foods
3. Zumba (Latin dance exercise) 45mins - 1 hr.

Class is free for our Spanish Catholic Center patients and their families. Please call for non-patient fee. Class is on 2nd and 4th Saturdays 10:30am-1:00pm. Classes are taught in Spanish but keep checking back because English classes will start soon.
